The Department of Medicine
This was founded in 1948 and over the next six decades the supportive academic environment has enabled the development of high clinical work and research, both through a strong Department of General Medicine and the many specialty units that have budded from it.
Infectious Diseases Training and Research Centre (IDTRC)
The Department of Medicine –I and Infectious Diseases (ID) is the hub of “infectious diseases” related activities in the Department of General Medicine. IDTRC aprogramme of the Department of Medicine Unit I and Infectious Diseases was inaugurated on the 19th of July 2005 by His Excellency Mr. Jon Westborg Ambassador of Norway in India. This facility was funded by a generous grant provided by Center for Tropical Medicine, Haukeland University Hospital Bergen Norway (HUH) USD 80,000. IDTRC is located in a 2500 sq. feet area that includes space for training, electronic access to information, clinical trial monitoring services, travel and adult immunization advisory, anti-retroviral drug dispensing team and journal publishing. IDTRC was founded to develop capacity in ID research, provide training and enhance good patient care in India via courses in health care epidemiology, infectious diseases, HIV Medicine and Tropical diseases via national and international collaboration.
International Short Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine
The first “International Short Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine” held in the year 2007 was envisioned by the founder of IDTRC Dr Dilip Mathai and our Norwegian collaborators (Dr Nina Langeland, Dr Oystein Strand and Kristine MØrch) from the Centre of Tropical and Imported Infectious Diseases. Appropriate care in tropical medicine to immigrants, refugees, volunteers and expatriates is often a problem. In addition, those trained in the West but who are committed to serve in a tropical country often find themselves incompetent to do so. This course is aimed at students who have some knowledge and considerable interest in Tropical Medicine. This course serves as a refresher and provides a stimulus to continue acquiring knowledge and expertise in Tropical Medicine. As Dr J.Don Maclean a pioneer in Tropical Medicine often said, “To study medicine without books is to sail without a map, but to study medicine without seeing patients is not to set sail at all”. Thus IDTRC, CMC Vellore hopes to provide a unique learning experience in the tropics.
